American Legion Post 305 - March - 2017

                                           From the Legion Commander

March is the official month of the birth of the American Legion. So Happy Birthday Legionnaires.

Our Valentine Dinner/Dance had a good turnout. A great meal, and Luke Warm And The Not So Hots were a
fun band. Thank you to John Crissman for his contribution. Thanks to all who participated or attended.

Tuesday, February 28th is our Polish Dinner, serving straight through from noon until 7pm, or until gone. It's
always a hit, so dine early.

Friday, March 3rd is the first of our weekly Lenten Fish Fry's, serving from 5-7pm. We are in
great need of people for cleanup and final dishes at the end of each these dinners.  There is a
signup sheet in the lounge. PLEASE volunteer.

The next Executive Board Meeting is Monday, February 27th,  at 7pm. The next Legion Meeting is Wednesday,
March 1st, social at 6:30pm with the meeting at 7:30pm.

Looking forward to Spring,
                                                                                            Wally Brodock

                                                                        From the Auxiliary President

Spring is nearing. But our Auxiliary has not been hibernating. This continues to be a busy winter with our many

The Wine and Craft Beer Tasting event on February 18th is history. The crowd numbers were down this year.
But there was plenty of wine and beer to sample. And we had an abundance of hors d'eouvres to nosh on. The
Raffle Baskets were fabulous. And the Karaoke in the hall was fun, too. Thanks to the committee, the
volunteers, and all who donated. "Success is not always measured in dollars, but rather in the hearts of those
who find enjoyment." I hope that we all had moments of fun that evening! Bar Manager Cami will have specials
of bottle and draft beer, and wine by the glass available in the lounge soon. The purchase of these specials will
benefit the Auxiliary. Ask your bartender.

Our Legion is asking the Auxiliary and Sons for help at the weekly fish fry's beginning on Friday, March 3rd
and every Friday through Lent. They need a few people each week for washing dishes and cleanup after the
dinners. There is a signup sheet in the lounge. Volunteer and give the Legion a gift of your time!

Saturday, March 4th, is the Auxiliary Euchre Tournament. Signup begins at noon and play starts at 12:30pm.
There will be a Bloody Mary Bar special that day. Bring items for adding to the drink, such as gourmet olive,
green onions, veggy sticks, stalks, and spears, meat and cheese sticks, bacon, chicken wings, etc. Purchase a
Bloody Mary and get crazy creative with the add-ons. To participate in the Bloody Mary Bar, please bring
something. The kitchen will be open, so NO OUTSIDE FOOD, except the Bloody Mary Bar items, may be
brought in. The last Euchre of this series will be May 6th, but April 1st Euchre will be our Soup Cook Off.

Saturday, March 4th is our monthly Breakfast Buffet, serving from 8am to 10:30 am.

At the last Unit meeting, we voted to have another Yankee Candle Fundraiser. This event is Feb. 28-April 4th.
Our Unit receives 40% of our total sales at Yankee Candle, and on our catalog sales. Our
group number is 990104116. This is NOT a one person project. This is OUR fundraiser and WE ARE ALL
RESPONSIBLE for GENERATING SALES. Just like any school class, church group, or other organization, WE
are all the salespersons. So we each need to take a sales packet, and ask our family, friends, neighbors, and
coworkers to consider placing an order, which will assist our Veterans. Remember, 40 cents of every dollar
comes directly to our Unit.

Our Funeral Luncheon Coordinator Brigitte is in great need of people willing to phone call members about
donating salads, side dished, and desserts, and also members willing to donate. The email list that we were using
to ask for donations was not adequate, because very few people responded saying what they would bring, if they
responded at all. She and I discussed that a personal phone call gets an immediate response, and we then know
what will be donated. We decided that a 2-3 person calling team, each with a different list to call upon, on a
rotating basis throughout the year, was a good solution. Therefore, if you would be willing to help make calls,
and/or would like to be included on the call list for donating something, PLEASE call me, at 616-891-8862, leave
your name, number, and pertinent info.

And speaking of volunteering, it is Annual Report time again. The volunteer reporting year runs from April 1st,
2016 thru March 31st, 2017. (You will have to estimate from March 8-31) You can claim volunteer hours for
anything you do, for anyone that you are not related to, and do not receive any money for/from. List WHO you
help, a Veteran or not, WHAT you do, WHEN the date was, WHERE you provided the service, and HOW you
provided service (personal hours, monetarily, cost of goods donated, etc.) Drop your list in the Auxiliary
mailbox in the lounge by March 8th. The officers will tabulate the figures soon after, and forward the report to
5th District by March 21st.

The next Unit meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 8, social at 6:30 pm and the meeting at 7pm in the
hall. (Please keep reports brief and discussions to a minimum.
Yours  in service, for God and Country,
Terri Brodock

Hello Legion Family,

Gather your rabbit’s foot, coins, trolls and any other lucky charms because it’s that time again; Bingo begins
again March 2nd, 2017.  The Early Bird game begins at 6:30 pm with the Regular start time being 7:00pm   If
you are not a player you can still join the fun, we are ALWAYS in need of volunteers for Bingo.

There has been a great response to our Grill raffles. We are raffling off a Full size backyard gas grill with 10lbs
of Shagbark tenderloin and are also raffling off a tailgating style grill with 5lbs of Shagbark burger. These are
two separate raffle items, which means you could win them both.  Tickets are 6 for $5 and 1 for $1 and are being
sold in the bar.  Remember these raffles allow us to continue to help our veterans and our community so buy a
ticket or several. Who knows you may be the next winner.  The winner for these raffles will be drawn at the last
Fish Fry of Lent. You need not be present to win as long as you have filled out your name and phone number
on your ticket.

Speaking of Fish Fry’s – Lent is fast approaching and the Legion will begin its annual Lenten Fish Fry’s on
March 3rd.  I might be biased but I do believe our Legion has the best Fish Fry and the Legion is always looking
for extra help. So come on down to support the Fish Fry eat, socialize and stay to volunteer if you feel so

Just a reminder that your membership card expired December 31st 2016 and membership prices increased $5
after January 1, 2017. If you have an expired card you are no longer entitled to the benefits of membership.
Please see JR to renew.

Our next meeting is March 13th with social hour starting at 6:30 pm and our meeting beginning at 7pm. I am
looking forward to seeing you all. If you are a member and haven’t joined us for a meeting yet, I would love to
have you join us, come down, and check us out; you might be pleasantly surprised to find out what our
meetings are all about. The SAL will even buy you a meal, what do you have to lose?
