American Legion Post 305 - September - 2018

                                               From the Legion Commander

Hello Legion Family,

I would first like to start out by saying it is an honor to be serving as your new commander. Kelly and I are
proud to be part of this great organization and look forward to the future endeavors to come.

This summer has been busy and the support of all our great volunteers made it possible. We conducted two
ceremonies for the Viet Nam traveling wall in Middleville, The 4th of July parade in Caledonia, and the Dutton
Days parade.  We also conducted two Texas Holdem’s that are a great fundraiser in support of our Veterans.

The Legions Upcoming Event:

On the 15th of September we will be hosting Operation Help a Vet. A big thanks goes out to Bill Van Port Fleet
and Gary Timmermans for making this event possible.

We also have another Texas Holdem which will be held on 20, 21, 22, 23 September.  In the past we had
volunteers from the Auxiliary and the Sons, but because of the law we can now only have Legion members work
these events. A sign up sheet will be in the lounge so please sign up so we can make this event successful.

Again this year we have our Pulaski Days TV raffle in support of Community Home Rebuilders, which provides
housing to homeless veterans in the Grand Rapids area. The TV is displayed in the lounge and tickets are for
sale. Please see the bartender for tickets.

October 27th we will have our annual Trunk or Treat in the hall. We are still looking for a chairperson for this
event and I will be asking for a volunteer at our General Membership meeting.

We will have our next executive board meeting on the 4th of September and our Legion General Membership
meeting on the 5th of September. Look forward to see you all there.

                                                                    From the Auxiliary President

Greetings to all our members at Post 305!

I would like to first introduce myself as your new President of the American Legion Auxiliary
Post #305. My name is Penny Kirk. I have been a member of this post since 2001. I have
served on the Auxiliary board as secretary and vice president previously. I am very excited to
be your President and welcome all ideas to help support our veterans and military. Our first
meeting will be on Wednesday, September 12th, at 7pm with happy hour prior to the meeting
at 6pm. I would love to see all of you at our meeting in September to kick off another great
year for the Auxiliary! We have meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of every month so there are
many opportunities to come and join in on the fun!

I would also like to introduce our officers representing all of you:
Vice President – Kristen Lazarski
Secretary – Megan Sallese
Treasurer – Carrie Tolan
Chaplain – Lori Trutsch
Historian – Kelly Yablonski
Membership Chairperson – Jenny Baisch

Along with our Executive board members: Amy Dunnuck, Denise Baldwin, Maria Kemp, and
Terri Brodock (preceding President).

Since we had the summer off, I do not have a lot to report from the Auxiliary except for our 8th
hour class we will be doing again this fall since it was such a success last year.  The 8th hour class is at Duncan
Lake Elementary for students to learn more about the different branches of the military and about what we do
at the American Legion to help our Veterans and Military.  We have the American Legion Executive Board
members support and they have graciously volunteered again to talk about their experiences. Anyone that
would like to help, we would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you and look forward to seeing you all at our first meeting on Wednesday, September
12th at 7pm!

                                                                    From the SAL Commander

Hey, how about the summer we have had? We had a little of everything that makes Michigan special. Now that
school is starting back up and everyone is back in the swing of things, here are a few items of note.

Spud and the gang pulled off another great steak fry on May 11th, 2018. The cooks are starting to enjoy the
challenge of grilling in the wind and the rain; they definitely met the weather head on and grilled over 100
steaks. Thank you to Sons members, the Ladies Auxiliary, and the many family members who volunteered both
Thursday and Friday to help make this fundraiser possible. That being said, the great news is that we have
another Spuds Steak Fry scheduled for September 28th 2018, 4:30-7:00 pm or until the steaks are gone. Please
support this event and bring a friend.

I would like to encourage members to consider volunteering for future fundraisers and projects that the Sons
promote. Two or three hours per year would make a huge difference to our organization. Thank you to the few
that showed up for the “Clean the Road” event. Thank you, Kristy, for lending a hand to the Sons project.
Also thanks to all who showed for our Flag placement and removal for the Memorial Week celebration. This is a
huge project and the many hands where appreciated.

I would like to thank Wally and Terri Brodock for their great service as Post Commander and Auxiliary
President during their terms. I enjoyed working and learning from both of you.
The Sons would also like to welcome new Post Commander Dan Yablonski and Auxiliary President Penny Kirk
to office. We look forward to your leadership and ideas in the upcoming years.

We are excited to see Eugene back in the kitchen and have already enjoyed his new ideas and creations on his
soon to be famous burgers.

Final thing, the Sons awarded a scholarship to Holly Denouden a senior at Caledonia High School. Thank you
to all of the members who volunteered to raise money for the last 20 plus years to award the annual scholarship.
Holly is a very impressive young lady and we wish her well in her future college endeavors.

Sons meeting will be held on 9/10/2018. Meeting at 7 sharp, social time is at 6:30.

                                  American Legion Riders-ALR News

Hi Riders

Well summer is half over. We had a poker run on June 14th, but the weather was a little wet but still had a good
ride. Please remember dues are due in May. We have a ride night every week, check the board for more
information. We meet the second Saturday of the month at 10 AM at the Post.

                                              Membership Committees

Your membership Chairperson, Legion, Auxiliary and SAL, now have the 2019 membership cards available.
Help them out by renewing your 2019 membership before the end of the year. It makes their job so much easier.

It is a new season and once again your trusting servant is requesting those of you with email to consider
receiving your monthly newsletter by email. Please help us out and subscribe by email. So far we have 474 of
818 members receiving the newsletter by email, why not consider trying it? We can always change you back to

Just a reminder, Home Depot, Lowes and Uccello’s provides a discount for all veterans showing their VA Card
at Home Depot and Lowes or American Legion Membership card at Ucceello’s. ABC Warehouse, the one on
28th St., will provide a discount on items purchased if you deal with Steve, the store manager and present your
Legion, Auxiliary or SAL membership card to him. IT Solutions, in Caledonia provide a 10% discount on work
or products with your membership card.

“Hello September” Hope everyone enjoyed their summer.

THANK YOU, volunteers, staff and patrons whom have given their support in helping the Legion to succeed.
We are constantly trying and achieving to reach our goals to continue to help our vets.

Look at your Legion calendar, web site, Face book and whiteboard in lounge for all up and coming specials and
activities to take part in.   

This fall, Sundays will be open 12-6pm for Detroit Lions home games.

Please encourage people to come in and take part of our food menu and specials. Eat in or take out.

Pot luck or delivered foods may be brought into the lounge area when kitchen is not in service.  If able Bring
enough to share.

Our Legion is proud to host monthly the Michigan Blood Drive.  Sept 24th 12-7pm.  It is a great thing to be
able to give the gift of life. Come on in and give your donation,

Hall rental is available.  Just call Cami Sterken at Post for information when needed.

Bricks may be purchased by anyone wishing to show support of our Post, you do not need to be a member of
the Legion, SAL or Auxiliary. Bricks may also be purchased in memory of friends or family who have or are
